Can’t We Try

Another night alone, another argument over God-only-knows-what. One more person in between us, one more issue that is left unresolved. Another box of Kleenex and another episode or two of Grey’s Anatomy alone in our darkened office.

I don’t doubt that we love one another. I don’t doubt that this is where we belong. But is love supposed to be this hard? Shouldn’t it be more simple, more black and white with little grey? I used to think that love was enough, the answer to any question. Now, I honestly don’t know. All I see is the chasm growing day by day, the loveless nights taking over; all I see is neither of us reaching out anymore.

And I just have to wonder…

Can’t we try?

  1. Terry Said,

In my experience, yes, LOVE does indeed have to be this hard. It has to be pampered and taken care of, tended to, or it will wither away and die. I think too many people assume that once the vows are over, no more work or wooing needs to be done, when actually, it’s just begun. One person cannot keep it alive and healthy. And rather than being a 50/50 proposition, it has to be 100/100. But considering it is the one most important relationship of your life, isn’t it worth the effort? Learning how to live with and get along with another human being can be difficult, but it’s because we love them that they are worth the effort, time & trouble. It’s all part of the ride, the journey.

OK, stepping down off my high horse…

  2. Rob Said,

Is there somewhere you can go for couples therapy? Learn how to discuss instead of fight? Find ways of coping with the tremendous stress you’re under?
